"Give us this day our daily bread, we pray, And give us likewise, Lord, our daily thought. That our poor souls may strengthen as they ought and starve not on the husks of yesterday."__Phillips Brooks

A few words about what you will find here - or rather - what you won't find here, and why. The thoughts offered as a guide to a daily quiet time are meant to encourage and strengthen. They are bread and milk from the Word of God.

By following this proven pattren you can have a DIY (do it yourself) Devotional time with the Lord each and every day.

The great man is he who in the midst of the crowd
keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
_Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have always been fascinated by birds... learning life lessons by watching them come for food and drink to stations first near my parent's window and later in my own garden.

When I became a fledgling Christian one life lesson I observed by watching my feathered friends proved invaluable to my growth in Christ.

Baby birds develop very quickly compared to the young of many other species, due in part to the rich diet of predigested food served up nonstop by their devoted parents. But, if the youngsters are to develop fully, eventually to fly away and live out their lives as God intended, they must, by natural law, learn to feed themselves.

The same natural law applies to baby Christians!

Use the analogy of predigested food -- apply it to all of the sermons, commentaries, books, tapes, and so on, and so forth available to us. Isn't it obvious? Someone else, our devoted parents perhaps, have found nourishment in the Word, digested it, and feed it back to us processed through their understanding.

Any baby's development will be severely limited on a diet of nothing except preprocessed bread and milk. If Christian youngsters are to develop fully, eventually to fly away and live out their lives as God intended, they must, by natural law, learn to feed themselves. Thus, a daily thought inspired from God's Word that you may use for a snack or a feast, as the Lord leads you.

Start with a prayer

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law, O Lord. Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with my whole heart. Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Great peace have those who love thy law; nothing can make them stumble. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
So be it.

Monday

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26

Trust in the Lord with all you heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Tuesday

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life. . . your heavenly Father knows what you need. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be yours as well. Matthew 6:25-34 * paraphrased

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and medicine to your bones. Proverbs 3:7-8

Thursday

I bow my knees before the Father, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts, through faith: Ephesians 3:14-19 * paraphrased

And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:37-40

Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on it's own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in right. Love bears all things, believes all thing, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."
Mark 4:30-32

And again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened." Luke 13:20
